Christmas is a poem, a myth, a song,
Here to give a god humanity,
Reifying hopes for which we long,
Illustrating what we cannot see.
Still, its beauty overwhelms its truth,
True of any well-wrought work of art,
Meaning more than might require proof,
An angel's voice for those who'd stay aloof,
Singing to the non-sectarian heart.
